December is behind us, and so is the whole of 2025! It’s been an interesting year for our industry, with ups and some downs. As you know, the true summary of the yearly stats comes a few months into the new year, so we’ll have to be patient. Meanwhile, we take a look at the month behind us, as well as an outlook at 2026, including trends, upcoming legislation, and expectations shaping the year ahead.
Standouts of the 2025 holiday season!
The holiday season is always a great time to look forward to new campaigns and visual inspiration. If you weren’t active this year in building eye-catching campaigns or opportunities, take a look at these impressive examples and treat them as a heads-up for next year!
For example, in New York, Burberry partnered with Bloomingdale’s to deploy a facade installation at the iconic department store, illuminating the surroundings with a glowing decorative digital ribbon which transformed the building into a big gift.

A more subtle example was seen in London, with the facade of the BFI IMAX building becoming a temporary branded experience. The huge surface was reimagined as “PIE-MAX” for two weeks, to showcase a giant hand-made turkey pie. Quite a sight.
These are a bit bigger than usual promotions, but they are lovely examples for inspiration. If you’re looking for something more humble, perhaps something to adopt in your own store for the next holiday season, take a look at our rundown of digital signage holiday uses from earlier this month.

Charleston City Council removes size limit for digital signage
Digital signage, especially large-scale digital billboards, has been a topic of controversial debate in recent years. We’ve talked about cities imposing restrictions on new billboards, with some implementing quite harsh and restrictive limits on its use. Some cities have even moved towards the point of outright banning it altogether.
With that in mind, it’s interesting to run across a bit of news where the opposite took place, such as in Charleston, South Carolina. The Charleston City Council unanimously approved an amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance which removes size restrictions on digital signage used by businesses. “It’s still going to have to conform with all the other restrictions that we have on these free-standing signs, like a minimum of 15 minutes as they turnover, brightness, etc.” said Committee Chair Mary Beth Hoover.
This bit of news certainly isn’t impactful on the realm of digital signage as a whole, but it is a good example that there is a positive move towards accepting the medium in such contexts. One of the main drivers for this change was enabling businesses to “modernize their signage while maintaining safeguards.”
Will Out-of-Home benefit from UK’s LHF ad ban?
Advertising is facing a change in the UK at the start of 2026 as a result of legislation restricting LHF (less healthy foods) ads. It came into effect in October of 2025 under voluntary compliance. Meanwhile, the legal deadline will hit January 5th, 2026.
The deadline is just around the corner, and attention has been shifting on other realms for advertising. Digital Out-of-Home is certainly one area of interest, and many are speculating that this ban will make an impact on the industry, as it’s exempt. With it comes the expectation of inflated costs and limited inventory.
These restrictions certainly pose a challenge for advertisers, in particular when it comes to TV ads, but the ban forces a change. With that in mind, there’s lots of changes around the corner when you put all other factors into consideration. Between programmatic digital signage, AI, and legislation, advertisers will be doing lots of adaptations in the year to come. It will be quite interesting to see how all these factors collectively impact ad spending and shifts in the industry by the end of 2026.
Build templates to speed up content creation!
This month on the OnSign blog, we provided guidelines on building templates on your digital signage platform, in particular if you use OnSign as your software of choice. Again, we talked about holiday digital signage uses, which might still be a good read even with the holidays wrapping up. You can prepare for next year, and events coming up early in 2026.
And there you have it, the news set for 2025! The digital signage industry went through ups and downs this year, and we look forward to what 2026 will bring. Earlier this month, we covered more about digital signage trends that await us. You likely already have a few trends in mind, such as AI and Programmatic signage, but a more important question is just how much development can we expect by the year’s end. Either way, we look forward to finding out!
