With the August sun fading, this month brought us encouraging stats and tech news! Samsung’s Micro RGB made its debut in South Korea. We also saw installations of new technologies like e-paper slowly moving forward. Some challenges still remain, however. In terms of statistics, an interesting comparisons between large scale digital Out-of-Home and online digital formats are made, with DOOH coming out with impressive numbers. Lastly, we have a quick overview of useful posts from the OnSign blog. Notable blog posts will be most useful for newcomers to digital signage.
A breakdown of in-store formats
Speaking of newcomers, let’s kick off with the basics! We stumbled across a really informative post for those just entering the world of retail media advertising. A post on the Internet Retailing blog outlined the most powerful in-store media formats, summarizing the ways they’re implemented and their impact.
For a start, digital signage screens are the core of the in-store retail media environment. The post outlined possible sizes, placements, and applications. There are also mentions of static signage, product sampling, in-store audio advertising, interactivity, as well as some newer formats which are not as popular yet but still offer unique potential. In case you need a crash course on formats, this post is a great way to start and grasp the potential of in-retail advertising, and digital signage in particular!
Samsung unveils Micro RGB
Samsung has recently announced the release of its Micro RGB display. This is essentially an upgraded LCD display aiming to reach OLED-level color accuracy.
Taeyong Son, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics said: “Micro RGB achieves unprecedented precision in the control of micrometer-sized RGB LEDs, raising the bar for color accuracy and contrast in consumer displays.” Unlike conventional backlighting, the setup allows for more precise control over each individual red, green, and blue RGB LED, bringing vibrant visuals.

Other points of interest regarding this piece of tech include the use of Glare Free technology, minimizing reflections even in bright lighting conditions. With Samsung Vision AI integrated, Micro RGB brings AI tech such as AI picture and sound, and a smarter Bixby voice assistant, powered by generative AI. The product made its debut in Korea, and Samsung is set to launch it in the U.S. with upcoming plans for a global rollout in different sizes.
DOOH catches more attention than other digital channels
The recent Attention Dividend study made interesting discoveries on the topic of Digital Out-of-Home. It confirmed the impact of large format DOOH, specifically in terms of long-term brand profitability. The greatest challenge marketers face is attracting attention, as the name of the study suggests. 75% of senior marketing leaders questioned confirmed this. They noted that the digital landscape is oversaturated, making it a challenge to catch attention without intrusive or bothersome campaigns.
The research involved 2,500 participants from a remote experiment conducted online through PC devices. Participants completed a 10-minute survey.

Notable key points of The Attention Dividend study include:
Premium large format DOOH is 5.1 times more effective than digital online formats.
Video on large format DOOH drives 2.5 times more brand choice than static content.
The 3D content format delivers a 32% boost to brand desirability.
Combining premium large format DOOH with standard Out-Of-Home enhances reach, frequency, and profitability.
Another interesting study we came across comes from German start-up Cyreen which investigated the impact of in-store digital signage for retail media purposes. Its result showed that digital in-store advertising boosted the likelihood of purchases by an average of 8.1%.
E-paper steadily marches onward!
E-paper has been a slowly-emerging solution in recent years, mostly noted for its low power consumption and replacement of printed posters with paper-like screens, a large-scale Kindle if you like. While it may feel like its growth is rather slow, the technology is quietly spreading!
A recent example of this use was seen in Seoul’s Nono Shop, which is a zero-waste store and vegan café. Their commitment now expands to e-paper displays provided by Samsung. This allowed the shop to eliminate paper waste by replacing seasonal menus and promotions via energy-efficient E-Paper displays.
The case of the Nono Shop paints a clear picture of this technology. While its benefits are very clear, the technology isn’t spreading as quickly as you’d think. The main reason for this is its current cost which is relatively expensive compared to LCD displays. Typically a brand switches to e-paper for sustainability efforts, as is the case with the Nono Shop.
Start strong with digital signage!
